When I got my new rocket ship for internet travels (big HP laptop with speed like I've never seen), I got a new gaming keyboard and wireless Logitech mouse. All really nice. (The gamers like keyboards with real, typewriter like keys with lots of travel. Who'd a thunk that gamers wanted the keys of the manual typewriter I learned on.)

Anyway, that mouse. Fits my hand really nicely. Great action. Has back and forward space buttons. But!! the backspace button is exactly where I've been putting my thumb the past 30 years. I've written several long post for you guys and accidentally backed up and run them over. Always fatal. Did it again this morning. That paragraph re: Sir Shackleton was my second try. Well, decided this is enough. I was going to see if I could return it and buy a comparable one without the buttons but I really wanted to finish that thought (without another accident).

Went to the shop, found a scrap of 3/8 x 3/4 clear pine (the stuff I space out rigid foam sheet insulation to prevent condensation), carve a groove for the buttons, shaped the underside to fit my mouse, the outside to be as minimal as feasible and taped it in place with electrical tape. Whole new experience! I'm going to get very used to this.

And the joy of the process - I just sharpened my chisels to shave quality. And my planes. Carving that perfect and very soft pine was bliss.

Sounds like a win all around!

What model HP laptop did you get? I've been a big HP fan for a long time.

When I got a new hyper fast unit I just plugged in the old keyboard and mouse no problem. The fancy new stuff is sitting in a drawer as backup if and when. Same issues as you noted Ben w mouse. Keyboard was a smaller unit not suitable for my clumsy fingers. I like the amount of real estate offered by the old keyboard.

I honestly don't know. It's several years old, used from a place I've been buy from and having computers repaired for many years. One man operation. It came with no paperwork and no guarantee (other than a solid man who knows his stuff).

The clues - it says Pavilion, B&O and Intel; Core 17 inside. Not a touch screen. (He had one of those also, a year newer, $50 more but this had better display (to my eyes anyway).

I'm also a fan of HPs. Their calculators. My HP-41 died a few years ago but the 41CX I bought in 1987 to run plug-in software is still doing just fine. (The software - celestial navigation. When we sailed the Atlantic my dad, brother and I each took sun sights the last day before landfall (and one of two with sun). I took the last sight and ran the numbers on my HP. Dad, skipper and navigator, checked my results. Same. We did our final course change based on those three running fixes. Our waypoint was the famous Fastnet Rock, literally a rock with a lighthouse on it. The southwest corner of Ireland. Our navigation was so dead on that we would have hit it had the visibility been zero. (Well, probably not. But when we first saw it from several miles away, it was as exactly straight ahead as we could steer.)

Hab, if you or anyone you know has use for a little used HP pen plotter, its yours for the shipping. I thought (dreamed) long ago my life was going to pan out differently, bought the plotted (its a big one that does poster size, 4 pens) and barely started using it when I landed a job working for a shipyard that steel fishing vessels, became their stability whiz and doing very little drafting. As I was doing that work and several subsequent similar jobs, I watched my boyhood dream fade away.

Ben...download the Logitech Unifying Receiver software and I believe it will give you options for how those secondary buttons work. And you can turn them off. Other nice thing about some of their mice is that they have a small button below the center scroll wheel that changes it from "click roll" to "smooth roll."

Slapping a piece of wood on top...that's certainly a unique way to solve a problem! Cheers.

Doesn't just solve a problem. It offers a really good landing place for my thumb. Felt odd yesterday but is already feeling it's supposed to be there. Does make it wider and I have limited side-to-side space with my setup but it's such a good mouse that it does better in tight constraints than probably any mouse I've had.
