How tight is the bead on GP 4ks? After my experience shedding a folding tire a few weeks ago and crashing very hard, I am having doubts about putting a lot of miles on the not so tight Vittoria Open Paves I love the ride of so much. Ben |

Entheo, those tests don't really answer my question which is what tires will stay on the rim after a flat and be rideable to a standstill. Well glued sew-ups stay on and are rideable (for miles if need be). I've proven that many times (well not the miles part). I don't recall ever having a wired on tire coming off, though my experience there is relatively limited (at least in the past 40 years). The Pasilas I ride for winter/rain/city/workhorse tires have always stayed on. It's the folding tires that scare me. The tire that came off was a Forte DC Pro. Those tires have a loose fit and easy mount even new. The Vittorias I love (the Open Paves) are tighter but not by a lot and I have wondered about them coming off when flat many times. All folding tires I have ever used were radically easier to take off after a few hundred miles than new. All this is leaving me feeling not very confident, especially riding fix gear, my true love. Maybe it is time to start switching back to sew-ups, starting with my fixie wheels. Expensive, a hassle. But maybe safety and peace of mind will push me toward using the most fun wheels on the planet again. It'd be rough! Ben |

those contis go on the rim easily. i've not flatted much with them over the years but when i have i've come to a safe standstill. i can't recall flatting on a descent. you certainly want to feel safe and secure so yes you should follow your gut. |

I had a Conti Gatorskin (rear) blowout on me while descending. Tire stayed on rim. I've found Conti's fairly easy to mount and remove (fold ups). The type of wheel rim you use is a factor, I had a rear DT RR465 and it was a pain to mount and remove tires. I imagine this makes a big diff in safety. I've found Vittoria's a bitch to mount, tight. Cont's are too expensive for me now. The Conti Ultra Race's that replace the Ultra 2000's are not the same tire. |

Ben, I ride four sets of Conti 4000's on my bikes - ride them all year. Very good as resisting flats (unless you just run over something really sharp). They've never caused me any problems. They roll and corner really well, and perform well. A couple weeks ago I ran over something really sharp which cut straight through the tire and tube. Was on carbon clincher wheels and the wheel stayed on the rim even though it was flat almost immediately. Put a dollar bill inside the tire and it was enough to get me another 20 miles to get home. |

My rims are Open Pros of various vintages and Velocity Aeros (the heavy, stiff, non-ferulled rims). GJanney, I've used that dollar bill tricks a few times, especially with the Vittoria Open Paves. I've even used mulitple bills, running one across the tire, bead to bead to stabilize really big cuts. One thing I have to credit our government with; they print high quality money. It may not buy much, but it comes in pretty handy for other uses. Ben |

Nashbar has Continental Ultra Race Wire 23 & 5 mm on sale and with yes it's wire bead but with 180 TPI/120 PSI @ $22 a piece you can't beat it with a shtick. http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_538472_-1___202471

I used to ride Contis, but I had sidewall issues with Gatorskins and 4000s. I stopped using Contis. I sent them a query and got no answer. |

I've ridden 4000s exclusively for the past several years with no issues. I even use them on my trainer bike. |
