Giro del Trentino: Bouet gains valuable buffer over peloton with stage 1a win

Early advantage for Frenchman as race leaders lose time

Maxime BouetRace favourites such as Bradley Wiggins (Sky), Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team), Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Michele Scarponi (Lampre Merida) and last year’s winner Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r La Mondiale) may have started the race hoping to fight for the overall title, but their task has become a whole lot tougher after a surprising opening stage of the Giro del Trentino today.

Pozzovivo’s team-mate Maxime Bouet (Ag2r-La Mondiale) snatched victory, being one of an eight man move which gained significant time on the peloton. He outsprinted Josef Cerny (CCC Polsat Polkowice) and Michael Rodriguez (Colombia) to pick up victory in Lienz and, importantly, ended the stage nearly seven minutes ahead of the peloton.

It means that he and the other two riders are in a commanding position in the event, which continues this afternoon with a 14.1km team time trial in Lienz.

“I get inspired by Italian races, even if I am just off a three-week time of rest, and my condition is not outstanding,” Bouet said afterwards. “I found myself in the break, and I gave it all to play my chances, as I knew I was fast in the sprint.”

The Frenchman went clear early on with Cerny, Rodriguez, Nicola Dal Santo (Ceramica Flaminia Fondriest), Enzo Moyano (Caja Rural), Pavel Kochetkov (Rusvelo), Jacques Janse Van Rensburg (MTN Qhubeka) and Gang Xu (Champion System).

Those riders build a maximum lead of eight minutes 51 seconds and while the peloton chased for a while, cooperation later crumbled as too few teams helped out.

That greatly boosted the break’s prospects of staying away, and ensured that one of the eight would win the stage.

Rodriguez tried to utilise his climbing strength on the Iselsberg, which came just over ten kilometres from the finish, but he was hauled back. Cerny attacked on the descent but both Bouet and Rodriguez got back to him. The Frenchman was then quickest in the three man gallop to the line.

Dal Santo, Moyano and Kochetkov were next in, 39 seconds back, with Janse Van Rensburg a further two seconds down in seventh and Xu holding on to take eighth.

Enrico Battaglin (Bardiani Valvole - CSF Inox) led in the main bunch a very considerable six minutes 51 secs later, with this gap handed Bouet a solid advantage at this early point.

Just four stages remain in the race, with this afternoon’s team time trial being followed by three mountain legs. While he’s built up a considerable buffer, Bouet doesn’t want to presume anything.

“We got a nice advantage on the favourites, but I am unsure about my GC credentials,” he said. “We will focus on our Ag2r leader Pozzovivo from today on. He is our leader and we will work for him.”

The team is likely to instruct Bouet to hold on as best he can, as his leader’s position hands Ag2r la Mondiale two cards to play.
