Linus Gerdemaan (Milram) will not be starting today’s stage 12 of the Vuelta A Espana. The German team captain has decided he hasn’t fully recovered from his crash in stage 11 to Murcia. He still complains of back pain and bruising.
Gerdemann crashed when his carbon specific brake pads couldn’t brake sufficiently on the aluminum braking surface of the wheel he received to replace a flat.
Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) will not be starting stage 12 either after new x-rays taken during yesterday’s rest day showed that the Italian has fractured his sacrum. Marcato crashed in the run in to the finish in Liege, but still managed a third place in stage 11 despite his injury.
Other riders that have abandoned during the rest day include Tyler Farrar (Garmin), Vitaliy Buts (Lampre) and Alberto Fernandez (Xacobeo-Galicia).
