Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has confirmed his participation in this year's Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. The event, which will take place on Sunday March 14th, is the world's largest timed cycling race.

Last night he Tweeted: "Hey South Africa! Excited to come down in March. Bringing your man @darylimpey with me. And yes, we're racing The Argus. Hear gr8 things."

Organizers were thrilled to hear the news, with event co-director David Bellairs commenting, "Last year it was Matt Damon and this year it's Lance. With such high profile individuals taking part, there can be no doubt about Cycle Tour's iconic status. It makes us extremely proud to be working on this event."

Armstrong's tweet indicated that he'll bring RadioShack teammate and South African Daryl Impey along to the event, which will be an added bonus for South African cycling fans.

"The fact that Lance will be riding Cycle Tour alongside one of South Africa's cycling superstars is just wonderful," Bellairs concluded.

2010's race will be the 33rd edition of the event.

View ProfileI'm baffled. He says he's in serious preparation for the Tour de France, but he raced a dangerous mountain bike event, and will fly to South Africa to ride a 68 mile sportive while others, including his "rival" are finishing 8 serious days of Paris-Nice? I read the story of Damon & his brother riding the sportive last year on a tandem. There were crazy winds blowing things across the road that someone who slowed down the Milan stage of the Giro might not want to seek out. Thousands didn't finish. So why get jet lagged to "race" 68 miles when there are serious Pro Tour events going on? I'm starting to seriously doubt that the guy will be in France in July.
