In a bid to improve his aerodynamic profile and his pedalling efficiency, thus boosting performance, Oscar Pereiro will undergo a biomechanical assessment tomorrow in Vigo.

The 2006 Tour de France winner will be examined by Specialized technicians and his position on the bike will be modified where necessary. The exercise is part of an effort to maximise his performance this year, helping him to regain his best form after a couple of disappointing seasons.

"Today technology applied to sports is essential,” he said. “Everything can improve in this regard, and I find it very interesting.”

Pereiro was involved in a dramatic crash during the 2008 Tour de France, breaking his arm when he toppled over a roadside barrier near a hairpin bend and hitting the ground below. He returned to the race last season but withdrew, showing poor form.

The 32 year old had contemplated retirement but, after an initial dispute over a signing he had made with Astana, he and the team confirmed that he would be racing with them in 2010.

His goal is to support Alberto Contador as he aims to win his third Tour. Pereiro is reportedly very motivated and will hope to derive good benefits from tomorrow’s assessment.

Contador has already undergone a Specialized BG (Body Geometry) Fit session, and also had his position tweaked.

The double Tour winner took his first stage race victory of the season at the weekend when he won the Volta ao Algarve.

Pereiro is yet to take a result of note in 2010, but has been building form through racing. He has competed in the Santos Tour Down Under, the GP Marseillaise and the Etoile de Bessèges thus far.
