Ruptured tendon in left knee repaired

Marcel WyssCervélo TestTeam Marcel Wyss had successful surgery today on a ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee as a result of a crash last Sunday in the GP Gippingen.  He was planning to ride in his home Tour, the Tour de Suisse, which begins this Saturday in Lugano, but will instead be replaced by João Correia.

“The surgery went quite well,” said the team's Chief Medical Officer Andreas Goesele. “Marcel was transported by the race ambulance to a local hospital after the crash, and they stitched the wound but didn’t realize that he had a rupture. We had him checked today at the Crossklinik in Basel and decided to operate immediately. Marcel will stay there until the weekend, and then his recovery will start. This kind of injury will take a long time to heal.”

Wyss started off his season well, with his best result being eighth overall in the Tour of Romandie.  He will now have to focus on what is expected to be a long road to recovery.

“Marcel was on the program for the Tour de Suisse, which starts Saturday in Lugano,” said Sports Director Marcello Albasini. “It is very unfortunate that we will have to do without Marcel Wyss right now, as he has provided some amazing performances this season at the Tour de Romandie and in last month’s Giro d’Italia.”
