I am riding Shimano 7900 mechanical now. The Shimano 9000 mechanical stuff is on sale at a couple of places right now. Seems like pretty good deals. I'm not that interested in electronic shifting. I'm not interested in Campy or SRAM. I'm not all that interested in 11 speed. I'll take it but it's not a burning desire for me. So the question is, is the 9000 stuff that much better than the 7900 series that I should pull the trigger ? Mostly looking at shifters, front and rear Ds, cassette and chain. That will set me back about $700. Opinions ?

Yes, it's that much better. I had 7900 for a while and loved it but then moved on to Di2. After trying the new 9000 front-derailleur shifting, I honestly think it's on par with 7970 Di2. The added leverage gained from the extended arm on the FD dramatically improves the shifting.

And the crankset is sexy as hell. You gotta get the crankset.

6ix, agree about the crankset. That is what started this project. I got the 9000 crankset with an SRM a few months back. Sexy it is.

Everything I have heard is that the 9000 stuff is outstanding....and a step above previous mechanical stuff from Shimano.

Who are having the sales? My 14 YO Campag Record 10 spd stuff is getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm getting an itch....
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Try arts cycling, They have a build kit combo thing where you only have to pick 6 items and you can mix in Ultegra stuff. So for me I could pick Dura Ace shifters, front and rear D, Dura ace chain, Ultegra cassette and some bar tape for the 6th item. Total $760

Nashbar is having a sale but for some odd reason they don't have the rear D and prices are a little higher.

9000 has a special chain and cables, supposedly you can use the chain on 10 speed. Funny that it took someone so long to use such a simple thing to fix it

The crank is pretty cool, best looking one since the 7410 from back in the day
