bad day today, did a major idiot maneuver. was stopping by a buddy's place to grab a coffee instead of another day riding in the rain. wet driveway, cyclocross dismount leads to a Wiley E. Coyote-style skating-type action on slippery flagstones with road cleats on. come down hard on my fat ass straight onto the down tube. sickening cracking sounds ensue. thin-walled carbon tubes aren't meant to bend that way, apparently. big rupture 3/4 of the way through, and the Dura Ace C24 front wheel is bent beyond repair too.
take it to the LBS, and they have a 2011 model year to replace the 2009 frame. $1300 for the same frame with updated graphics. probably another $400 for a wheel, if they can even get one, or $800 for a whole new set.
an expensive lesson. oh well, gotta get back to work and figure out a way to pay for the replacements. |

Look cleats by any chance? I stopped using Look pedals as they were ungodly slipperly on wet surfaces. Switched to Shimano with no regrets..... |

Sorry to hear that, that really sucks. Happened to me once while dismounting and throwing a leg over my saddle while moving but the other cleat wouldn't dislodge and I ended up on my butt, I saved the frame though. Nowadays when I'm using road cleats I come to a complete stop before dismounting.

Roberts Composites in North Vancouver might be able to repair the frame. Check out his website for pictures of repairs. Might be some one local to you as well. Might be worthwhile as a second bike at least. |

so, turns out the Dura Ace 7900 crank is done too. in the fall, i suspect the crank bore the brunt of the weight as it landed drive-side down. so, the tally thus far: - Stevens road frame broken - front Dura Ace C24 rim bent beyond repair - Dura Ace 7900 crank spider bent all in, probably looking at $2200+. _just to replace_ what i already had with the exact same thing. ugh. |

My first thought about that cracking sound from your a$$: busted tailbone. Not fun. I've got one. The orthopedic who diagnosed it gave me two choiices. Do PT and learn to live with it or surgery same as back surgery with less risk, but still real risk. Said he would be happy t do it but recommended PT. My mishap was about as dumb. Walking to my boat in wetsuit booties carrying all my sailing gear n my hands. Slipped on teh wet dock and sat down hard. Hurt but got better. 18 months later I was woring tons of OT, my riding and conditioning were falling off and my back started kllling me. My doc gave me anti-inflammatories as I recall. They did nothing. Reported that to my doc. He said I wasn't supposed to say that and sent me to the ortho who dent me to X-ray. So, cleat question. I'm a LOOK user. (I need no-float.) What are my options? I know about Speedplay Zero. (I need 4 pairs. LOOK compatibles are cheap and work.) Ben |

Seriously check with the builder first and then Craig Calfee second . I don't know what the builder can do for you but Calfee is an expert Carbon repair company too. I hear reasonable too. Good luck and be glad the crack wasn't you |

apparently there is a fellow in Montreal that does carbon repair. i'll probably get it done and make it into a TT bike or something later on. |
