I am in the market for new road shoes. My old shoes are seven years old, and saw their last good day a couple years ago. Unfortunately, I have short toes (~ Eu 43), a very wide forefoot and a narrow heel. It's very difficult to get a sense of who makes a shoe for this type of foot. Not willing to give up any market share, it seems most shoes are marketed "to fit like a glove on any foot." Nice, but even ill-fitting gloves suck.
Does anyone know of a shoe that has a nice roomy toe box with good heel hold down? Should anyone be familiar with Altra running shoes, the shape of the Altra Instinct is HEAVEN for my foot. Looking to mimic that fit.

| I don't know of a shoe that fits both at the same time. I've found that Sidi have a more narrow heel, but I prefer Specialized as they have a great toe box. The Specialized heel is pretty standard, but I would bet that you could tighten the heel with conventional heel shims that you'd find in any good shoe store. If you find a shoe that meets both needs, let us know. |

| Haven't purchased lately, so this may or may not apply to current product, but at least in the past Shimano shoes would work for your feet. |

Jim,
After I fractured my foot several years ago I needed the same thing. I've been using Sidi Mega because the front of the shoes is just enough wider (plus maybe a bit more volume) to give my 5th meta some space but the back of the shoe doesn't seem any wider.
If you can't find any in town let me know and you can try my 43 Dominators on for size. |

| If you're willing to pay for it, the Shimano fancy ones are heat mold-able and have a "cat's tongue" fabric in the heel to hold you in. They work for my wife who has wide feet and often has a rub issue at her pinky toe. |

Your feet are like mine - forefoot like Fred Flintstone, heels like a ballerina. Also crazy high arches and a high instep. Cycling shoes are a nightmare for me. Northwaves are pretty good, their omega heel is really good and their toe box is fairly wide. The older (mtb) ones I have are better. The newer (road) ones I have are slightly narrower.
My mtb shoes are going to die soon. I think I will try either the Northwave Extreme Tech (supposedly very roomy forefoot area) or the Shimano heat molded ones next. |

| Agree about the Sidis. I have similar feet - wide front, narrow heel, high arch. I've tried so many over the years but only kept the Shimanos and Sidis. |

Try the Fizik's offering, been wearing their MTB shoes on the cross bikes, and have tried on the road version at the shop, the full kangaroo leather version is pretty sweet, full carbon sole, heat moldable insert, etc.....
Nice toe box, and then a secure heel, very good shoes, and not outrageously expensive like the new Sidi offerings

Thanks folks. Much of the advice indicates I have tried the right shoes. I've gone from Shimano R215's to Sidi Megas, to Specialized Pro's. I'll poke around local shops and try some Fizik's, Bontragers, and Northwaves to see how they fit in addition to the one's I've already had.
DKRI...funny coincidence how you describe your feet. My wife refers to my feet as "Little Fred Flintstones"! |

No one has offered Bont. I will.
Wide toe box, heat mouldable, remoldable, ergonomic, stiff, and very low stack. Top models are also very light. The standard models are about 100mm wide and they are also available in wide.
I have a pair of A-2 and they solved a lot of shoe issues especially related to narrower tow boxes. I went from Specialized which were very comfortable but I still got metatarsal cramps after long hard efforts. I did not like the foot beds but a pair of super feet insoles was the magic ticket for me.
They look different from most shoes and I thought a little birkenstoc but comfort trumps fashion and I am not saying these are ugly, just different. |

Sort of step on your toe to spite your shoes? I bought mine in a store but almost bought them online. Distributors are often jerks and often they are great. Sorry you never actually used these shoes. I love mine and right now I'd buy them from nasty nasty people before I went back top teh mainstream brands. |
