Can anyone enlighten me here, what is this race and why would a Euro pro go there other than for the curiosity factor? Read the Q&A with Boom but didn't really learn anything other than that it's tough (snowy sections; hike a bike). https://www.velonews.com/2019/04/gravel/qa-why-lars-boom-is-heading-to-vermont-for-the-rasputitsa-gravel-race_493007

Post-career preparations?

Lots of former road pros are doing well in “alternative” racing formats and it allows them to continue racing past their prime. Guys like Ted King are arguably more successful and popular in their post-road careers than they were racing the road.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

Mixed blessing with recently retired or soon-to be retired pros jumping in on the unsanctioned/ fun races like DK200. It brings them a lot of notoriety and makes the race national news but kills the cool local racer winning vibe.

I know one of the guys who's won it several times and won gravel worlds once. When you ride with guys like that you get a sense of how you stack up, when some pro jets in from Europe and spanks the field it takes all that away.
