So much for fire in the belly. http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/14816/Wiggins-casts-doubts-on-ever-targeting-Tour-de-France-again.aspx

well he's achieved fame & fortune and doesn't want to sacrifice his family to do it all over again. looks like he's not going to make the same mistake Odysseus made.

I have thinking that was his subconscious reason for this seasons performance. I think it can be tough mentally to keep doing it. It's not unprecedented that an athlete focuses to achieve a goal like world championship, World Cup , Olympic medal then once achieved they loose the drive to do it again. Lots of other factors of course but I am not surprised by his statements. Not many athletes would admit what Wiggins said.

I'm not a big BW fan but I respect his thinking. A world TT title would be a great ending.

I am not a BW fan either and at first i thought he was just being a wanker (not that I remotely know what that means). But i actually think its the first sign that he has his head screwed on right. Staying at the pointy end of the peleton must be a very hard thing to do. With all kinds of pressures to do some not so savory things.

If that's the case can he continue to draw the same salary? He's a stage racer, and I'm sure was being paid the big bucks for chasing the Tour. When I told my boss I really didn't want to be a project leader they laid me off. I was a solid and reliable performer, but they were paying me to be a leader (apparently).

good question laurentja-- prob will see a change in his contract arrangement. If he wins the worlds TT I'm sure he will still command a big sal tho.

Christian Prudhomme thinks he is coming back next year. Who knows. This is my prediction:=> Froom will win this year (I don’t see anyone beating him unless there is a miss-hap). Wiggo will go for the World - if he does well, then he’ll come back and find another team otherwise I can see him retiring and going into coaching.
I do like him because he knows his $h1t smells just like the rest of us.

It looks to me like Wiggins is a realist and sees the big picture. Last year everything was right. His form, his team and the Tour course. The competitors who could have beaten him were not there. He rode the pointy end like a leader. It was harder than anything he ever did before, in fact, harder than he could have imagined. He won.
The likelihood of all those factors falling into place again in the next couple of decades is small. In the remaining years of Wiggins' competitive lifespan? Pretty remote.
So his choices are: chasing a dream/pursuing the expectations of others or backing off Tour racing which requires the entire year based around it and doing the races that he is better suited for and more fun.
My thought? That Wiggins has an ego small enough to accept what is and be comfortable with it? Pretty cool. This gets him a lot of points in my book.
