FWIW, the CDC is doubling down on staying the course, two shots or none. Their sound logic is that weaker vaccinations in the current setting of wildfire viral spread is conducive to creating virus mutations that might increase resistance to current vaccines. Analogous to taking half of antibiotics for a bacterial infection, or incomplete chemo for a malignancy. 1/2 can be a lot worse than 1.
I wish I was wiser. I am persuaded by the all hands on deck approach to dampen the current surge, but . . .

My 21-year-old daughter got a mild case last April and recovered only to have severe side effects reappear in August. She has been to numerous doctor and specialist appointments, along with tons of tests and scans, and no one can figure out what is going on. She has constant chest and heart pain and cannot do much beyond walk slowly. This for a woman who swam regularly and ran 40+ miles a week prior to getting sick. The only good thing in all this is she is remarkably resilient and positive.

Damn, Dave...sorry to hear that. Best wishes for a complete recovery for her. Please keep us updated.

My 19 YO daughter had a mild case in October when she was at school. Still doesn't have her full sense of smell back.

So it sounds like even if you had Covid there’s a 50/50 chance the South African or South American strain could lead to repeat infection. Some of the mutations will be hard to deal with.

OC, just caught your PM closing airports to foreign travel, upping tests and quarantine, requiring recent test results for cross-border travel. Wow and right on! (Had we a someone who could have man dated that last winter/spring, how many trillions of dollars and hundred thousands of lives would we have saved? Well, that person would have also had to see to it working tests were made and tests from abroad stayed refrigerated.)

Interesting your news cycle seems to be a little bit behind. That was one maybe two weeks ago. Today’s headline is “ B.C.'s provincial health officer seeks injunction against churches for defying COVID orders”. The PM meanwhile is in hot political water over vaccination strategy. At current rate I’ll get my dose maybe September with upshot being at least by then we’ll know how effective various vaccines are against different strains. Sounds like in South Africa they’re needing to adjust their strategy because their mutant strain is pretty resistant.

Apologies for bringing up the topic of Covid, maybe too soon. Just observing, gratefully, that the hospital I work in just dropped their mask requirement. Almost 3 years exactly since it hit the fan.
I also tip my hat to OC, who (IIRC) predicted early on this would be a 3 year deal. I found that depressing at the time, but now I hope it's true.

Good for you LSD, that’s a long time of mask wearing.

I recall reading a bunch of risk evaluations from firms specializing in such matters and communicating that timeline they predicted here (basically the read was part of a discussion at work about how to respond to Covid and for how long we’d need to keep those measures in place). The kind of stuff politicians and decision makers should have read. What surprised me was how quick their evaluations were produced and how accurate their timelines were. It included various interim points including when vaccines would be ready etc. Perhaps it just showed that COVID followed a predictable evolutionary pathway. And that our haphazard response was also predictable.

I'm still masking most places....will depend on the situation and how good ventilation is. Going to see Springsteen tomorrow night in Milwaukee and I'll be masked.

but Mrs. CK is high-risk, so I am taking extra precautions. If it was just me, or if she was 100% healthy, I probably would not be masking.

The reality is that COVID will always be with us now...and people are still dying and Long COVID is very real. It is up to us to now decide how we will live it....

The NY Times talked about a study and write up done in the '20s re: the US Spanish Flu. That study was very detailed, very well done and presented the different approaches to the pandemic in different cities, along with the results. It has been considered the bible on how to deal with aerial infectious disease since.

The conclusion, summed up very crudely from near 3 year old memory - masks work, distancing works, shut downs work - but they have to be done consistently and for long enough.

Now, if only someone with say read that before or in early COVID ...
