/A bicyclist who fatally struck an elderly pedestrian while riding in San Francisco earlier this year has pleaded guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter in what appears to be the first such conviction in the United States. Under the plea deal announced Tuesday, 37-year-old Chris Bucchere will avoid jail time, and will instead be placed on probation for the next three years and required to perform 1,000 hours of community service./

Many predictably negative reader comments. This guy made a series of bad decisions...

Saw this over on FB from another publication source. Similar rants from motorists denegrading all cyclists as evil impediments to their daily commute since everyone knows roads in America were 'always made for automobiles'.

Well, In SF cyclists very rarely stop at stop signs, often totally ignoring them and blowing through at high speed. Stop lights are observed more often, but some ignore them as well. The ONLY mitigating circumstance to this crash was that the cyclist had a yellow light and the pedestrians had already started crossing against their red. In most cases the pedestrians would have been seen as wrong, but since it was discoverd the cyclist had blown through many red lights just before this the authorities decided to go after him big time. Also, it was the second death-by-cyclist in SF in a year - the previous being an elderly lady hit by another cyclist.
For cyclists in general it seems there are several "shades" of red lights used to justify their actions: Just turned red, Red, Almost Green.
