Sure it could be just for a nice payoff in his last year, but as a disc brake fan, I'll use my alternative facts and accept some disc love.
YMMV.

"Alternative facts". Funny, but scary.

if discs were of no advantage, MTB's would still be using V-Brakes, or Canti's. Racers have skillz, so, I'm sure their rim brakes are fine, but for the general consumer, or bike geek, the advantages are HUGE.
I think it's a matter of them getting used to the systes. But who would not want true one finger braking, less hand fatigue on a descent, etc...
That Venge Disc is heavy though, but I'm sure all manufacture's are working on lighter systems

The Venge Vias Discs is heavy because of the overall design primarily, not the discs. The previous rim-brake version was pretty pigish......

But aero trumps weight, so the focus went there.

That said re: aero trumping weight, I may not use a disc for the IM 70.3 World Championships next year....the race director has stated that he wants 5K feet of elevation for the bike course in just 56 miles. To put that in perspective, the full IM Madison bike course has about 5K feet of climbing and it is considered one of the toughest IM bike courses. Using the same elevation game in 1/2 the distacne? Yikes....

Oh, and he then wants 1200 feet of climbing on the run. I am soooooo fooked.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!
