Nick,think survival. If you were a plant in the desert, think of how many animals would do anything to eat you (for the two tablespoons of water distributed throughout your plant body, if for no other reason). By contrast, those east coast plants have so many delicious neighbors that they fight for soil to root in and sunlight for growth. The animals have plenty to choose from. No one (of the weed cousins) is endangered.
