Can Contador survive? If he wins this thing with his shoulder like that, would anyone ever question his
toughness?
second question, can Aru TT? We know Porte can, just not sure about Fabio |

According to Contador's doc, the most restful place Contador can place his arm is on the bike. That and the only painkillers he is getting are over the counter, that they had no plans to apply for a TUE. Apparently riding in the saddle, he is quite comfortable. Also that hard efforts may take a toll, but he certainly can do it. See the photo of him going flat out on Aru's wheel when Aru took that second from him. He is also sleeping well. All bad news for his rivals.
I think their best chance at this crash being a large factor is if Contador wins a stage, forgets and does a victory salute. (Left arm extending past 90 degrees - verbooten!) He will open up his TT stance a little. Same lean forward but the arms a little wider apart, so that should cost him a few seconds. So his rivals probably won't see a Giro ending salute Saturday.

Sky should be embarrassed , Your team leader needs to get a spare wheel from a guy on another team ? Protecting your GC leader is pretty high up there in terms of things to do on a flat stage. Who's job was it to look after him ? Shouldn't there have been a Sky rider near enough to give him a wheel? Two riders , three ? Where the heck was everyone on Sky ?
I bet part of this was pay back for the time Richie went back and got a bottle for Chris in the tour inside the no hand up zone and they got away with it. The hammer came down this time. |

| Once that tweet went out, it was hard for the organizers to ignore it. Generally if they can give you the benefit of the doubt, they will, like with mechanics holding onto the bikes while "fixing" a derailleur and such, however the pics and the tweet left no doubt and hard to pretend it didn't happen. |

The rules are the rules, to wit:
"First, technical assistance between opposing teams is explicitly forbidden by the rules."
The rest is just blather.
Neither Porte, Clarke, nor the (non) attending Sky rider knew the rules?
Unless Clarke had 'ulterior motives' - which seems unlikely - Porte has nobody to blame but himself.
I'd be interested in seeing comments from Hinault or Cadel Evans....

I usually look at these from the eyes of an official. I spent more than 25 years as a commissaire. the jury had no choice. twitter had it everywhere and the rules have no wiggle room at least for the jury. all that said I appreciate the warm and fuzzy with regard to fellow countrymen but what other sport tolerates assistance from their opponents to beat them? at worlds we have national teams and there is often complaints of team affiliations corrupting the result? who can we have it both ways?
this is not a fondo, it is a race where Orica and sky are opponents. an Orica rider forgets his team affiliation and contract. he puts friendship ahead of his team. I get that but it is not the spirit of competition. To me it is a clear violation of the rules but even more so the spirit of competition. Maybe not the spirit if sportsmanship which is really related to sport but not with intent to win. Cycling by its nature is very complex in this relationship simply because it is one of the few sports where your chance of victory often depends on cooperation of opposing teams. all that said it is clear there was a Sky rider present to provide Porte with a wheel. |

There are loads of rules that may or may not make sense-- infield fly rule, designated batter, junior gearing and football (hand-egg) inflation range but as long as they are there; well, ignore them/ violate them and suffer the consequences. |
