Apparently he used a dropper post. Massive risks payed off. Win versus crash was 50/50. He’s been waiting for this opportunity for years and came well prepared.

Mohoric pulled off that descent using a dropper post. The next new thing. Drop your butt or get dropped. The seatposts getting laughed at on forums a year ago will the hot new item.

Except this one makes bikes safer.  (Do you ban better rubber for race cars knowing it raises race speeds?  Disk brakes that allow racers to approach mountain corners faster?)

sure everyone in peloton simultaneously monkeying with their dropper posts sounds very safe.

Dropper posts are very simple to operate and almost brainless….they can also be programmed into eletronic shifting systems (although I don’t know if DA accommodates it). As Ben noted, it actually makes it safer as it lowers your CG and provides more stability on tight technical descents (and also makes you more aero).

Brilliant tactical move.

seriously impressive ride by MVP….now MSR is often a ride you can bluff your way through, but I don’t think that was the case today. The group got so whittled down on the Cipressa that you had to have the legs to be there.

Still remains the best 30k in bike racing….love this race.

Back to the results and a bigger picture. Dropper post and other tech not withstanding, Slovenians winning all over the place smells like Tyler winning LBL, LA 7, etc etc. .
Smell test fail.

The main thing that smelled today was that Pog seemed to somewhat deliberately leave a gap when Mohoric went. I think he realized it wasn’t going to be his day and this was a repayment of service on national team. Still a brilliant and gutsy move but it was fairly evident.

Been saying this for awhile….when any nation has started to dominate results, something has invariably been up. Italy in the 90’s, US in the 00’s, GB in the 20-teens….

The notion of countries becoming dominant being suspicious is fine (Spain together w Italy in 90s) and there’s Aderlass w Slovenia connections.

But Slovenia has also been going through massive change since it became independent in 91 so I think in part we are seeing results of that.

And what about Belgium hahaha.

Weird I get same link again when I go to that page. But you can Duck Duck INSIDE SLOVENIA’S ASTONISHING RISE TO THE VERY TOP OF CYCLING. That should get you there. Btw I’ll disagree that dropper posts will make things safer. They can make things safer. But in a racing setting (MTB) they’re being used for competitive advantage increase speed. Higher speed, not safer. Mohoric ride being a case in point. The guy practicing this all winter.

I view this the same as things like suspension….it allows you to ride faster while also riding safer. The two terms do not need to be in contrast to each other. They can be complimentary.

That said, I think it is a niche use product. It was perfectly implemented yesterday, as the Poggio descent is so technical. I don’t expect to see droppers infiltrate the peloton in July.

There are also technical limitations…namely, you need a round seatpost. Most pro bikes have a shaped seatpost. Mohoric opted out of an aero road frame in order to use the dropper…again, clearly the right choice in that case, but I don’t know that it indicates mass adoption is gonna happen.

This just in, manual clock using TV footage

don't usually time descents but I can make an exception this time because I was too curious.😅 Matej Mohoric descended yesterday the Poggio in 3 min 35 sec, average speed of 53.58 km/h! 🙈 For reference, Sean Kelly did 3:47 in 1992 and Nibali 3:49 in 2018. #MilanoSanremo
