Enjoying the prelims. And especially the US Netherlands heavyweight match on now. A lesson in Karma for the lawnmower wannabe Dutch hacker. OTOH, the US is getting outplayed. No further spoilers.

Lots of surprises now that the group phase is done. Some big name countries already out. A surprising number of African countries moving ahead. Europe generally replacing North America as top teams, that is a logical consequence of the Women's Champions league in Europe which has been super competitive. Lots of young talent emerging from several countries and older players on way out, it all bodes well for future of women's soccer.

Canada is already out; I knew we were in trouble when I saw 40 year old Christine Sinclair as still being part of team. Awesome player but even last worlds was already a stretch; we simply have not been tapping into the talent pool as efficiently as other countries have. Same to a lesser degree with USA who barely avoided early elimination and now have their work cut out for them against Sweden (perhaps favorite team next to England).

Netherlands seems to have recovered from a down period when we lost our coach to England (best coach male or female in the world) but the new guy (one of her assistants prior) has righted the ship even though our star striker is absent due to injury.

USA midfield has been a weak spot, maybe reflects we have not been a soccer playing nation. We faked it on superior athleticism and gumption until recently. IMO, odds of a 5th game for the USA are not great. Just observing that they are making the bigbucks now, maybe fat and happy?
This geezer would love to have to eat these words, and I hope I do. Where have you gone Mia Hamm? Class off the and on pitch, and ever ruthless on.
OTOH, cool to see other countries get into the women's game. The comparatively smaller goal may make soccer more palatable for many.
